FCI Gilmer Federal Overview
Federal Correctional Institution Gilmer is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons at 201 FCI Lane in Glenville. BOP describes it as a medium-security federal correctional institution for male offenders with an adjacent minimum-security satellite camp. It is in the BOP Mid-Atlantic Region and the Northern District of West Virginia. Although it is physically in Gilmer County, it does not serve as the county jail for a person arrested by the Gilmer County Sheriff's Office or Glenville Police.
This distinction drives the whole search process. A person arrested in Gilmer County and detained before trial is normally searched through WVDCR regional jail channels, often Central Regional Jail. A person serving a federal sentence at FCI Gilmer is searched through BOP by register number or name. The two systems do not share the same roster, photo practice, visitation process, or money-deposit rules.
Federal Correctional Institution Gilmer Population
BOP public facility data modified June 25, 2026 reported 1,245 total inmates at Gilmer. The main FCI population was 1,172 and the adjacent camp population was 73. These figures are part of the federal prison population physically housed in Gilmer County. They should not be mixed with Central Regional Jail's regional jail population or with a Gilmer-only arrest count.
The BOP FCI Gilmer facility page identifies the institution and its federal role.
The BOP facility page is the official source to confirm that FCI Gilmer is federal custody, not a county or regional jail.
Lookup FCI Gilmer Inmates
Use the BOP Inmate Locator for FCI Gilmer. BOP covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. Searches can run by number or by name. A number search can use BOP register number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number. A name search requires first and last name, with optional middle name, race, age, and sex fields.
- Open the BOP Inmate Locator instead of the West Virginia regional jail roster.
- Search by BOP register number when available, or by first and last name.
- Review the result for name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location.
- Confirm the institution as FCI Gilmer before using mail, visit, or money rules for this facility.
The BOP locator is the search form for federal inmates at FCI Gilmer.
The locator returns federal status fields, not local booking charges or Gilmer County jail mugshots.
| BOP Search Field | How It Is Used |
|---|---|
| Type of Number | Select BOP Register Number, DCDC Number, FBI Number, or INS Number for a number search. |
| Number | Use the known federal number when available, such as the BOP register format. |
| First and Last | Both are required for a name search. |
| Race, Age, Sex | Optional filters can narrow common names. |
FCI Gilmer Address and Contact
FCI Gilmer uses separate physical, staff-mail, and inmate-mail addresses. BOP public data lists phone, fax, and a contact email. Do not send money to the facility address. BOP says mailed funds go to a national processing center in Des Moines, Iowa, regardless of the institution.

For a county arrest, this contact block is usually the wrong place to start. Central Regional Jail and the WVDCR regional jail search handle current regional jail custody. FCI Gilmer staff cannot confirm a state magistrate case, post bond for a county defendant, or pull a Gilmer County sheriff booking record. For a federal inmate, use BOP's locator first, then match the institution, register number, and mail address before contacting the facility.
FCI Gilmer Custody Limits
FCI Gilmer can create confusion because it is inside Gilmer County while the county-serving jail is not. A Glenville address does not make FCI Gilmer a local lockup. Federal sentenced inmates are in BOP custody after federal case processing and designation. State prisoners use WVDCR systems. Regional jail detainees use WVDCR regional jail search. Immigration detention uses ICE ODLS when the person is in immigration custody.
A federal detainer is also not the same as being housed at FCI Gilmer. A person can have a federal hold, a state charge, a county case, or a parole/probation issue while still appearing in a regional jail or court system. Search the system that matches the current custody status, then confirm by phone when travel, mail, or money is involved.
Visiting FCI Gilmer Inmates
BOP visiting rules differ from WVDCR regional jail visits. The BOP general visiting page states that inmates create a visiting list at a new prison, potential visitors return completed forms, and the institution reviews background information. BOP says institutions generally have visiting hours on weekends, holidays, and sometimes weekdays, but visitors must check the facility's own visiting regulations and call ahead because wardens can restrict or cancel visits for safety, security, severe weather, or incidents.
| Topic | FCI Gilmer Visiting Detail |
|---|---|
| Approval | Visitors must be on the inmate's approved BOP visiting list. |
| Schedule | Use FCI Gilmer's current visiting regulations and call ahead. |
| Changes | Wardens may restrict or cancel visits for security, weather, or incidents. |
| County-jail rules | Central Regional Jail visit rules do not apply to FCI Gilmer. |
FCI Gilmer Mail and Money
Mail rules depend on whether the person is at the main FCI or the satellite camp. The research records BOP inmate mail for the FCI at P.O. Box 6000 and camp inmate mail at P.O. Box 7000, both in Glenville. Staff mail uses P.O. Box 5000. BOP communications guidance also covers phone, email, mail, package, and money rules for federal inmates.
| Service | Provider / Detail |
|---|---|
| FCI inmate mail | Inmate name and register number, FCI Gilmer, Federal Correctional Institution, P.O. Box 6000, Glenville, WV 26351 |
| Camp inmate mail | Inmate name and register number, FCI Gilmer, Federal Correctional Institution, Satellite Camp, P.O. Box 7000, Glenville, WV 26351 |
| Money | BOP says mailed funds go to the national processing center, not the facility address. |
| Phone and email | Use BOP communications guidance, not GettingOut or ConnectNetwork. |
Federal Custody at FCI Gilmer
FCI Gilmer is not a street-arrest booking site for ordinary Gilmer County jail cases. It houses sentenced male federal inmates. A local defendant may have a federal case or a federal detainer, but that does not mean the person is held at FCI Gilmer. Federal pretrial custody, U.S. Marshals holds, regional jail custody, and BOP sentenced custody are separate phases and may involve different facilities.
BOP result fields can include name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location. BOP does not publish ordinary federal booking mugshots through the inmate locator. Local booking photos, when available, are handled through WVDCR or West Virginia public-records channels, not FCI Gilmer's BOP locator.
About FCI Gilmer
FCI Gilmer is one of the most visible custody facilities associated with Gilmer County because it is physically located in Glenville. It can dominate raw inmate counts inside the county, but it should not be used to find a person arrested locally on a county charge. For county jail custody, search Central Regional Jail through WVDCR. For federal prison custody, search BOP. For immigration custody, use ICE ODLS when the facts point to an immigration detention search.
Families should also keep court systems separate. A federal sentence and a state or county criminal case are different records. BOP can show federal custody location and release information, but it is not the West Virginia magistrate or circuit court file and not a Gilmer County booking record.
Note: Confirm the inmate's BOP location before mailing, planning a visit, or using federal money procedures.
